WORD POWER

When Jesus said in John 14:12He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works shall he do, because I go to the father,” What was he thinking? I know what I think, that’s impossible, no human can replicate the awesome life of Jesus.

This challenge was unlike anything the disciples ever heard, so they didn’t do the best job passing it on. After Jesus ascended, it wasn’t long before the seeds of the Pharisees and Sadducees took root again. Here’s what happened, they tried to develop a new religious hierarchy in Jerusalem. Fortunately a man named Paul, who was dramatically converted, sidestepped their prejudices and exercised the power of words. What has evolved over 2000 years of church theory is a collective trail of cathedrals/churches and denominational adherents. That isn’t even close to what Jesus said. He wasn’t into buildings or competing theologies. He didn’t even object to the demolition of the Temple in Jerusalem.

LOVERS AND TRADERS

heart-674850_1280

– “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.”

I John 4:7

She loves me, she loves me not, she loves me, she loves me not. I watched my cousin work his way around a wild daisy, alternating those statements until the petals were stripped. Then he lifted the last petal and announced she loves me!  I asked why he did that? He said he liked a girl and wondered if she liked him.

If interpreting love was only that easy. For my cousin who questioned the daisy – he was as incapable as the flower to know if she loved him. At the tender age of 7, I got the idea that loving and liking were the same. In everyday conversations people used love and like interchangeably. They said they love or like food, they love or like people, cars, houses, jobs, or money – you name it.   What I saw was this, when a person liked how someone looked, how they dressed or whatever, that perception carried the hope of romance – but liking is fickle. It can be changed to dislike by a disapproving look or a critical word. I am not saying that liking someone is wrong, it is wonderful, but relationships need more. The flesh can like but love is vital to keep the flame burning through hard times. Con artists are masters at being likable. Beware of flattering words that recruit you to an uncomfortable cause. Then there is the friendly deceiver who wants in your wallet or the charmer on a quest for Victoria’s secret.  Sin and deceit like best to be called love. Continue reading

Opportunity to Serve

OpporOpp to Servetunity is missed by most people because it is

dressed in overalls and looks like work.

~ Thomas A. Edison

“Ugh…I have to go on a call.” My frustration was evident as I explained to my family why, on Christmas Eve, I had to go check on a patient. As I pulled out of my driveway that night I was not happy with the attitude that welled up in me when my phone rang and I saw it was the office calling. I knew I needed to do something to try to avoid the dread of being the on call nurse. I needed to remember why exactly I do what I do.

Masks

child-188655_1280I penned the thought below February 21, 2014 and still find it true to our lives today.  We all have masks we hide behind, willingly put on conforming to the world’s standards, snuffing out the individuals God made us to be.  All to ready to accept sameness and the oppression that comes with it, we find ourselves alone and crave someone to truly know us outside the box of social conformity. Other times we take that step and find ourselves standing alone, rejected by the same people we thought knew us only returning to our boxes and patterns because we believe it safer.

Mom Life: When Laundry Speaks

laundry-413688_1280

Ahh……..Laundry! I’m sure you can hear the sarcasm in my voice as I dare utter the word.  It is one of the most mundane tasks I do. It ranks a little lower than grocery shopping and I’m not even going to lie, it ranks even lower than going to the dentist.  There are some days the sheer smell from the kids clothing not to mention the monstrous amount…..biblical proportions even…… laying beside the washer takes on a living persona and I almost hear it utter, “Wash me!”  Ohh the horror!

Open My Heart to Receive More

Oh Lord, as I sit at your feet I want to tell you I love you. Open my heart to receive more of you. I long for more of you. Take me to that river of life. Let me drink deeply from the wells of salvation. Renew my mind so I can be more like you.

Life Lesson: Behind the Mask of Perfection

mask-875534_1280

From the time we are little we watch and imitate the actions and manners of others and gauge what is right and wrong by what we see as true in how they handled the situations before them. We learn to hide behind masks of various types whether right or wrong. We go through our lives presenting ourselves as perfectly folded laundry to those around us only to learn that our perceptions and what we gleaned truth was actually a lie. Everything we learned to hide behind, tossed up, thrown down, stomped on, and drug through the mud. If we were to sit back and really ponder on the actions and processes of those we learned from, we may just see, they were so desperately trying to live a life striving of perfection, love, adoration, praises, putting layer upon layer of dirt and mire to show themselves and ourselves worthy and deserving only to lose who we truly are and our purpose. Jesus did all of this for us already on the cross.

Painted Houses

“for they gave that to those who did the work, and with it they repaired the house of the LORD.”
2 Kings 12:14

2015 has been a year of great joy and celebration. It has also been one with its share of transition, sadness, pain and struggle. It’s amazing how the Lord uses the ordinary to speak to my heart. He unfolds life lessons in the mundane items bringing forth a new and refreshing perspective.

This fall, my husband and I took a hard look on the outside of our home. The paint had bubbled up from intense heat over the past several summers. In some areas the paint had peeled away exposing the harsh white primer beneath the surface. In others the paint had either chipped or faded so badly we couldn’t believe the true color of our home once painting began.  It had faded that much….yikes!  In addition, the siding rotted in areas around the guttering and needed immediate repair.
